Mary (God bless her!) will spend every 18 minute snuggle-o-love with My Little People Farm book. I happen to know (without looking) that on the cover of this well loved and abused book, there are two pink pigs, two blue birds, one red bird, three cows, oh no, wait is that a HORSE?!, two cows and a HORSEY!, a happy puppy dog, flowers -- oooh, pretty!, a sheep that goes baaa and another that doesn't. Don't get me started on page two.

Just Be
A few weeks ago, I went to a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. The speaker was Vanessa Shaw (who -- or is it whom?, I can never remember -- Mikele is well acquainted with, by the by) -- mommy of four littles out of the womb and one about to make a break for it -- introduced the concept of "Just Be". It was a much needed reminder and encouragement to actually BE with your kids. Imagine that. The gist is: spend 18 minutes with each child every day (18 for very scientific reasons, of course). Just the two of you. Doing whatever their little heart desires. If need be, tie the other(s) in the closet until aforementioned alone time is accomplished with the current child of your affection. I may have added that last part myself. Seriously, you'd be surprised how long 18 minutes is. And how much connection can take place in such a short (looong) period of time. And how less needy they are throughout the day having had some truly quality time with Mommy. I am ashamed to say that although it seems I spend every waking moment with them, often times I'm not with them. Her concept or whatever you want to call it, was exactly what I needed to hear. I hope, if you have little ones, you're encouraged to do the same... maybe even throw your husband in there for good measure.

As for Gracie and Coco... it's a cryin' shame they only have 20 places to paint.

1. I have known Vanessa since she only had 2 kid! (Don't ask me why I care that Mikele just got all that credit for knowing her.)
2. Baby Charlotte was born on Thursday! Five kids out of the womb...crazy.
3. The "Just Be" concept is amazing. I love having that time with the kids. It is definitely easier when both parents are around. (Vanessa has a nanny to help man that other kids, so she can have her private time with each child. Wouldn't that be wonderful?)
4. Do you guys do pedicures or would that be butting in on your special time?
Thank you, just what I needed to hear. I think I'm going to wake one of them up right now and give them some time. It is already 6:15am!
I'm gonna do it! As horrible as I feel saying this... I'm challenged by it. I've been convicted of more "quality" time with my kids lately. After our talk yesterday about our babies, I'm REALLY convicted now! Love you, girl!
ps- I'm going to write "the days are long, but the years are short" on my mirror so I can see it at the start of every day! maybe I should tattoo it somewhere.
Good reminder in this life where we get too busy running our kids to this place or that and doing so much. This life is short and our time with our little ones is so very precious!!! Thank you for sharing this :)
that is a good idea...I often feel the same as you.I am with my children every minute of the day but often I am not really "with them". Good blog Kristi
I still want to know how it came to be 18 minutes. Now I just need an egg timer...
Ok - I'm insprired too. 18 minutes start now as I hear my sweet girl chirping that she's done with her nap.
Mikele - she decided on 18 minutes because people are able to add up 15 minutes too quickly. (ie I have three kids so 45 minutes - that's too much!!)
I loved her when she came to speak to our MOPS group. I've been trying to 'just be' with Jeremiah but he really doesn't do anything for 5 minutes, much less 18 minutes.
Mostly it's me chasing him around or helping him walk. He's still so much fun and I try to be with him more throughout the day since she spoke.
Vanessa wanted the idea to "stick". She thought 18 minutes was random, so people would remember!
Good stuff...Relaxed mommies make relaxed kids.
